Abstract: Long-term comparison of the outcomes obtained from Ahmed Glaucoma Valve surgery performed by glaucoma surgeons versus other ophthalmic surgeons.

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on 130 patients with refractory glaucoma who had been followed up for at least six months during ten years (2004 to 2014) at Khatam-al-Anbia Hospital, Mashhad, Iran. The follow-up periods were in the range of 6 to 60 months. The success of Ahmed Glaucoma Valve surgery was defined at least 20% reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP) and range of IOP was from 5 to 21 mmHg without vision loss and the need for medication or re-surgery. Patients were divided into two groups (96 patients) according to glaucoma surgeons (36 patients) and other ophthalmic surgeons.

Results: The mean age of 130 subjects was 27.34 ± 24.45(range from 1 to 84), of which 64 (49.2%) were female, and 66 (50.8%) were male. The overall successes of both methods at the end of four years were 66.7% and 41.7% for the group of glaucoma surgeons and other ophthalmic surgeons, respectively. (p> 0.661). Although there was a significant difference for IOP among various follow-up periods (p = 0.004), this difference was not significant between the two groups (p> 0.374).VA did not have a signifiant diffrence between various follow-up periods and sergoen groups (p = 0.419 and P=0. 690, respectively).

Conclusion: Concerning Ahmed Glaucoma Valve surgery, there are comparative results regarding the success rate and between glaucoma surgeons and other ophthalmic surgeons for the long-term follow-up.
